Thinking about trying HYROX but not sure what you actually need? Whether you’re preparing for your first race or simply want to start HYROX-style training at the gym, having the right gear can make your workouts more comfortable, efficient and enjoyable.
With the AirAsia HYROX Kuala Lumpur taking place from 10 to 13 December 2026 at MITEC, HYROX is set to make its Malaysian debut. The race combines eight 1km runs with eight functional workout stations, making it a unique challenge that requires both endurance and strength.
But before you fill your Shopee cart with every fitness gadget you can find, remember: you don’t need an entire home gym to get started. Here’s a practical HYROX starter pack covering the essentials worth buying first.
1. A Good Pair Of Training Shoes
If there’s one item you shouldn’t compromise on, it’s your shoes.
HYROX involves 8km of running combined with functional movements, so your footwear needs to handle more than just a treadmill or outdoor run.
Look for a pair that offers a good balance of:
- Comfortable cushioning for running
- Stability for strength movements
- Good traction for exercises such as sled pushes and pulls
- A secure fit that doesn’t leave your feet sliding around
You don’t necessarily need a dedicated HYROX shoe when you’re starting out. A reliable hybrid running or training shoe can be enough for your early workouts. Most importantly, break in your shoes during training rather than wearing a brand-new pair for race day.
2. Comfortable Sportswear
Your workout clothes need to survive both running and functional exercises, so comfort should come first.
Look for lightweight, breathable and sweat-wicking T-shirts or tops, paired with shorts, leggings or training pants that allow plenty of movement. Avoid anything that feels too loose or restrictive. You’ll be running, lunging, squatting, rowing and carrying weights, so clothes that stay securely in place will make your workout much less distracting.
Malaysia’s warm and humid weather also makes breathable sportswear especially useful for outdoor training.
3. A Reliable Sports Watch
A sports smartwatch or fitness tracker isn’t essential, but it can be incredibly useful when you’re training for HYROX. Because running makes up half of the race, tracking your pace and heart rate can help you understand how hard you’re working and whether you’re starting your runs too quickly.
A watch can also help you monitor:
- Running distance
- Running pace
- Heart rate
- Workout duration
- Recovery
- Training progress
This is particularly useful as you progress from beginner workouts towards sessions that combine running with functional exercises.
4. Resistance Bands
Resistance bands are one of the most affordable and versatile pieces of equipment you can add to your HYROX starter pack. They can be used for warm-ups, mobility work and strength exercises, and they’re easy to keep at home or throw into your gym bag.
Use them for exercises such as banded squats, rows, lateral walks and shoulder activation. They’re also useful on recovery days when you want to work on mobility without doing a heavy workout.
5. Kettlebells Or Dumbbells
You don’t need a full rack of weights to start building HYROX-specific strength. A kettlebell or pair of dumbbells can help you train many of the fundamental movements needed for functional fitness, including squats, lunges, carries, presses and swings.
For beginners, focus less on lifting the heaviest weight possible and more on learning proper movement technique. As your fitness improves, you can gradually increase resistance and introduce more challenging workouts.
The goal is to develop the strength and muscular endurance needed to continue moving efficiently when you’re already tired from running.
6. A Gym Bag And Water Bottle
It sounds basic, but a good gym bag can make preparing for training much easier.
Choose one large enough for your shoes, change of clothes, towel, water bottle and smaller accessories. Separate shoe compartments can also help keep sweaty footwear away from your clean clothes. A reusable water bottle is another simple essential. HYROX itself provides hydration stations during the race, but having your own bottle is useful for training and before and after your event.
Since HYROX workouts can be demanding, make hydration part of your normal training routine rather than something you think about only on race day.
7. Foam Roller Or Recovery Tools
Training consistently is important, but recovery is just as important. A foam roller can be useful after running and strength sessions, particularly when your legs feel tight after exercises such as squats, lunges or sled work.
Other recovery products you might consider include massage balls, stretching straps and massage guns. You don’t need to buy all of them. Start with one recovery tool that fits your budget and learn how to use it properly.
Think of recovery equipment as something that supports your training rather than a shortcut around it.
8. Training Gloves: Nice To Have, Not Essential
Gloves can be useful if you find that your hands get uncomfortable during strength training, particularly when doing carries or pulling movements. However, they’re not a must-have for every beginner.
More importantly, check the official HYROX rules before race day if you plan to use gloves or other accessories. The current singles rulebook permits gloves, but certain equipment is prohibited, and permitted accessories may need to be worn throughout the race rather than added midway.
9. A Training Mat For Home Workouts
Planning to train at home? A non-slip exercise mat is another worthwhile addition. It gives you a comfortable surface for movements such as burpees, planks, stretching and mobility exercises.
You can also use it for warm-ups and recovery sessions on days when you don’t want to head to the gym. A mat takes up very little space, making it one of the easiest ways to turn a small area at home into a basic training zone.
10. A HYROX Training Plan
The final item in your starter pack isn’t something you put in your shopping cart: it’s a plan.
HYROX requires both running and functional strength, so simply doing more of one won’t necessarily prepare you for the race. HYROX recommends incorporating running, strength work and sessions that simulate running when fatigued. Start with a manageable weekly schedule and gradually increase the difficulty. For example, you could combine:
2–3 running sessions + 2 strength sessions + 1 HYROX-style workout per week
Your exact programme should depend on your current fitness level, experience and goals. Beginners should increase training volume gradually and prioritise good technique.
What Do You Really Need For HYROX?

The best HYROX starter pack isn’t necessarily the one with the most gear. Start with the essentials: a good pair of shoes, comfortable sportswear, a water bottle and access to basic strength equipment. Add items such as a sports watch, resistance bands and recovery tools as your training progresses.
You also don’t need to recreate a HYROX race at home. HYROX provides the official race equipment and weights at its events, so your priority should be building the fitness and movement skills needed to use them effectively.
Whether you’re planning to compete solo, team up with a friend for Doubles or join a Relay, start with the basics and build from there. Your HYROX journey doesn’t need to begin with an overflowing shopping cart. It just needs the right gear, a consistent training routine and plenty of determination.
