After a prolonged absence in the local flagship smartphone market, Huawei is back with a bang with not one but two premium devices to kick-off 2022. The launch of the Huawei P50 Pro and P50 Pocket in Malaysia marked the first time the company is bringing new top-of-the-line flagship phones to our shores since December 2020. Besides, they are also making their first international debut outside of China. Here’s all you need to know about the phones, including when and where you can get your hands on the Huawei P50 Pro and P50 Pocket in Malaysia.
Huawei P50 Pro: Noteworthy Features & Specs
First announced in July 2021, the Huawei P50 Pro finally gets its long-awaited release in the global market after its home debut. Compared to its predecessor, the P50 Pro features upgraded hardware—for the most part. It has an updated design with a central circular hole punch instead of a top-left pill-shaped cutout. Around the back, two giant round camera bumps housing four camera lenses replace the rectangular module on the P40 Pro. For those wondering, yes, Huawei is still partnering with Leica in the photography department.
While Huawei’s reputation for making excellent hardware is never in doubt, the P50 Pro does come with a few caveats. There is no 5G, which is unfortunate considering that the first consumer-level 5G network has just gone live in Malaysia. Moreover, the ongoing US sanction means Huawei phones still do not have access to Google services. However, P50 Pro owners will get to enjoy Huawei’s proprietary HarmonyOS.
Here’s a quick look at the P50 Pro’s specs and how they compare to the P40 Pro.

Huawei P50 Pocket: Noteworthy Features & Specs
Samsung’s Z Flip series finally has a worthy rival with the announcement of the P50 Pocket. Huawei’s latest take on the foldable phone design sees it going for the flip phone form factor that is, ahem, more pocket-friendly.
It features similar dual-camera bumps on the P50 Pro but with a neat twist. That is, Huawei has placed a tiny cover display on one of the bumps that serves multiple functions. You will be able to check notifications, receive calls, access your playlists, and even take selfies without opening (or unfolding) the phone. Specs-wise, it packs overall flagship-level hardware and runs on the same HarmonyOS software as with the P50 Pro. Like its non-foldable sibling, it also doesn’t come with 5G support.
Besides the standard P50 Pocket in white, Huawei has also collaborated with haute couture designer Iris Van Herpen to produce the P50 Pocket Premium Edition. It features “organically flowing patterns” in stunning gold tone. On top of the fancier outer shell design, the Premium Edition also boasts higher RAM and storage memory.
