Vivo X60 Pro And X60 – More Than Just Pretty Pictures

If there’s a smartphone feature that constantly gets updated year after year, iteration by iteration, it is no doubt the camera. The camera function is one of the most used features for many users as capturing moments to be kept as memories or for social media has become an integral part of life. In this day, the smartphone camera has never been more sophisticated, bringing in all sorts of features to make photos and videos look as good as they can be. The vivo X60 and X60 Pro, launched in Malaysia recently, are the latest example of this.

The vivo X60 and X60 Pro both feature the same triple rear camera system. You are looking at a 48MP primary camera, a 13MP ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, plus a 13MP telephoto lens. On the front, you get a high-resolution 32MP camera for selfies.

The Zeiss And Gimbal Factors

vivo has built the X60 series around their cameras, which is the top-billing feature on the new devices. The company has partnered up with Zeiss—one of the world-leading manufacturers of optical systems and optoelectronics—to “co-engineer” the phones’ camera system. The Zeiss brand will be instantly familiar to consumers who are acquainted with Nokia phones in the past.

vivo has integrated the Zeiss imaging system into the X60 and X60 Pro’s camera system. The company boasts that they are able to reproduce the intricacies of the iconic Zeiss Biotar lenses, which are known for their beautiful swirling patterns that are introduced into the background at wide apertures.

One of the most common causes of bad images is blurry shots, no thanks to shaky hands. The X60 series takes image stabilisation to another level with its gimbal stabilisation feature. A gimbal system is usually found in professional-grade imaging tools (including drones) and not commonly featured in smartphones. It helps in stabilising shots to produce clear images by balancing movements and countering shakes.

The devices also excel at shooting in low-light situations with their trio of night photography features, namely Extreme Night Vision 2.0, HDR Super Night Portrait, and Ultra-Wide Night Mode.

The camera system on the vivo X60 and X60 Pro not only handles photos well but is also capable of producing great-looking 4k/60fps videos. But of course, seeing is believing. To showcase its full capabilities, vivo Malaysia has recently collaborated with acclaimed and award-winning local filmmaker, Chong Keat Aun, to direct a short film using the X60 Pro as the main shooting camera.

The Incident was shot in just two days with an assembled cast that includes Miss Universe 2015 finalist Pauline Tan, popular veteran actress Adibah Noor, and child actor Yuan Teng. It tells the story of the hardship a single mother—who works as a food delivery rider—goes through to support her family after the untimely death of her husband.

Besides the poignant tale which you can watch below, be sure to also check out the behind-the-scenes footage that shows how the short film was shot using the phone. It is a strong testament that smartphones like the X60 series are good enough to create film-quality projects.

There is more to the vivo X60 series than just camera prowess. Both devices sport a 6.56-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display with a high 120Hz refresh rate, and are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G processor. In terms of RAM and memory configuration, they offer up to 12GB for the former and 256GB for the latter, with fast UFS 3.1 storage. The two phones also feature under-display fingerprint scanners.

So what exactly are the differences between the two, you ask? The key differentiators are the display design, build material, and battery. The more premium X60 Pro has a dual-curved screen and aluminium frame, as opposed to the flat display and plastic frame on the X60. However, the X60 Pro also has a slightly smaller battery capacity, though both batteries support 33W fast charging.
