What Is Pickleball?

You can think of pickleball in the same vein as tennis, table tennis, and badminton as it combines some elements of these racquet sports. In pickleball, players hit a perforated plastic ball with a paddle and score points by sending the ball into their opponent’s court without reply. The game can be played in singles (two players) and doubles (four players) matches.

A dedicated pickleball court resembles a tennis court but is much smaller in size and dimension. It is divided into left and right service areas, a non-volley zone, and a baseline. The sports can be played indoors or outdoors. Alternatively, pickleball can also be played on modified tennis or badminton courts.

Despite its recent surge in popularity, pickleball has been around as far back as 1965. Originating from the United States, its popularity has spread worldwide thanks to its unique combination of rules and equipment to make it a fast-paced, strategic, and fun sport for everyone involved. This dynamic sport is also known for its accessibility, making it an ideal choice for people of all ages and skill levels.

  • Paddle – Pickleball paddles are smaller than tennis racquets but larger than table tennis paddles. They are made from materials like wood, composite, or graphite. Graphite paddles are lightweight and provide excellent control, making them a popular choice for competitive players. Composite paddles offer a balance between power and control, while wooden paddles are more affordable and suitable for beginners.
  • Ball – The pickleball is a lightweight, plastic ball with holes. It is designed as such to reduce air resistance which makes it slower and easier to control while allowing for longer rallies and more strategic play. There are different types of balls for indoor and outdoor play, with the former typically having 26 holes with wider diameters while the latter has 40 holes with smaller diameters.
  • Attire – As with any racquet sport, comfortable athletic wear and proper court shoes are recommended to ensure ease of movement and prevent injuries. The shoes should provide good grip and support for quick lateral movements.
