In today’s competitive job market, finding the perfect job can be both exciting and challenging. Online job boards and social media platforms have made it easier for job seekers to explore opportunities. However, this convenience has also given rise to job scams. Read on to find out the common job scams associated with Shopee Malaysia and tips on how to verify job offers.
Understanding the Shopee Malaysia Job Scam Landscape
Job scams in Malaysia come in various forms, but they all share a common goal: to deceive job seekers into providing personal information, money, or both. One of the most common forms that we may encounter is Impersonation.
What Is It?: Scammers impersonate Shopee recruiters on social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp. They approach you and offer enticing job opportunities that seem too good to be true.
How Does It Work?: The scammer will send you a message asking if you’re interested in doing a part-time job, which the job scope includes helping online merchants to “Like” products on the Shopee app. In return, you will receive monetary rewards for completing tasks. The screenshot below is a sample conversation of how a typical job scam message is.
Red Flags to Watch Out
While job seekers need to be cautious when verifying job offers, it’s equally important to be aware of the behaviours that legitimate Shopee recruiters would never engage in. Here are some red flags to watch out for:
- Requesting Payment: A legitimate Shopee recruiter would NEVER ask you to pay for any part of the recruitment process, such as processing fees, background checks, or application fees. If a recruiter insists on payment, it’s likely a scam.
- Too-Good-to-Be-True Offers: Job roles offered in job scams in Malaysia typically have a simple job scope with vague job descriptions. For example, your job only involves liking and sharing the products listed on the Shopee app. Sounds too good to be true, right? Legitimate job offers typically have detailed and clear-cut job descriptions.
- Fake Business Certifications/Employee ID: Some scammers may even prepare fake business certifications or employee ID cards to lure your trust. However, legitimate Shopee recruiters will never share any business certifications or Employee ID cards as both are considered private and confidential information.
- Skipping the Interview Process: All Shopee job offers will involve a series of recruitment processes, which includes conducting interviews to assess candidates’ qualifications and fit for the role. Be cautious if you’re offered a job without any interviews or assessments.
How to Verify Shopee Job Offers
- Check the Email Domain: Legitimate Shopee recruiters use email addresses with the “@shopee.com” suffix. Be cautious if you receive an email from a different domain.
- LinkedIn Verification: All our Shopee recruiters are workplace-verified on LinkedIn. Feel free to check the profile of the recruiters when in doubt. The workplace verification is visible on the profile page, as shown in the screenshot below.
- Cross-Check Company Information: Visit Shopee’s official LinkedIn page and website to cross-check the recruiter’s information with what’s provided by the company.
Reporting Suspected Scams
If you encounter a job scam in Malaysia or suspect fraudulent activity, report it immediately to the relevant authorities listed below. Your actions can help prevent others from falling victim to the same scam.

While the job search process can be exciting, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of job offers. By following these steps and staying informed, you can protect yourself from job scams and make more informed decisions in your job search.
Remember, genuine employers will understand your desire to verify their identity before moving forward, so don’t hesitate to take these precautions. Your job search should be an exciting journey towards a fulfilling career, not a potential pitfall of scams and fraud.
