But learning how to calm yourself down in the midst of one can help you move on quicker. It triggers the release of feel-good hormones, like serotonin, which boost your mood and protect you from developing anxiety symptoms. And the simple fact is, engaging in exercise can divert your attention away from the very thing you\u2019re anxious about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back, the year I was most active was also the year that I had the least panic attacks. I found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/blog\/tag\/running-shoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">running<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the neighbourhood park an easy and cost-effective way to get the heart pumping and keep a clear mind. Committing to year-long HIIT classes with friends also meant that I was getting a weekly dose of serotonin <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> social support. It\u2019s as simple as inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly, but it works to lower the heart rate and increase the supply of oxygen to the brain. This, in turn, promotes a sense of calm and relaxation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/self-help\/guides-tools-and-activities\/breathing-exercises-for-stress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends breathing in deeply through your nose for 5 seconds, then breathing out gently through the mouth for 5 seconds. Keep doing this for at least 5 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Moreover, negative thoughts can distort the severity of a situation, so hearing someone else\u2019s perspective can help me change the way I view my worries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, if you know a friend who has an anxiety disorder just like you, they\u2019ll be able to offer better support and advice on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to calm down<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stop <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an anxiety attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. By breaking them down into smaller chunks and figuring out solutions, those problems would usually feel a lot more digestible and much less overwhelming.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Let A Few Trusted People Know\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re at a public or social event, knowing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to calm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety down <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on your own isn\u2019t always easy. What I do, in this case, is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tell a few trusted friends that I regularly suffer from anxiety attacks and let them know what would make me feel better if I had a bout.
