In reality, the opposite is true. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is actually beneficial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for pregnant women<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it helps ensure a fitter pregnancy, smoother delivery, and easier recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put this matter to rest, we spoke to Malaysian pregnancy fitness coach Karen Siah about what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise for pregnant women<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entails. And to help you work your way to a healthier pregnancy, she also shared with us five workouts that are essential for expectant mums. Karen is a mother of two herself and a living testament that you can stay active throughout your pregnancy. I always wanted to remain active if I became pregnant and get back into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/Sportswear-cat.11000538.11000582.11000585\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after giving birth, so I took a course in training pregnant clients a few years ago. With my own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/Maternity-Care-cat.11000345.11000452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experiences and the knowledge I have researched, I figured I could be a great help to women who want to remain active and healthy during and after pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Are there any misconceptions about exercising while pregnant that you would like to clear up?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional Asian way of thinking is that pregnant women need to rest, do and move very little, and not lift heavy things so as not to jeopardise the pregnancy. However, when pregnant women become sedentary and move very little, their muscles weaken and they become very unfit. These women end up becoming very weak after giving birth. On top of that, they need to take care of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/blog\/popular-baby-girl-and-boy-names\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newborn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a huge task, especially if it\u2019s their first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Let\u2019s put this myth to rest once and for all \u2013 is <\/b><b>exercise<\/b><b> safe <\/b><b>for pregnant women<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. So long as there are no other complications to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, guided <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is completely safe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for pregnant women<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why is prenatal <\/b><b>exercise<\/b><b> so important <\/b><b>for pregnant women<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From my extensive research and experience, it is far better for a pregnant woman to continue moving and exercising so she\u2019s able to maintain some muscular strength, stamina, and withstand the growing weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prenatal exercise can also help reduce <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/shopee.com.my\/blog\/best-massage-chair-in-malaysia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, muscle cramps, and water retention; improve sleep and blood circulation; and ease the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/blog\/stages-of-labour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labour process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! After giving birth, it will give a mother the fitness and strength to care for her newborn, which possibly helps to reduce the likelihood of postpartum depression too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Are there instances where <\/b><b>exercise<\/b><b> is not encouraged <\/b><b>for pregnant women<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, if the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has complications, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not encouraged. Some common complications that may happen are issues with the placenta or amniotic fluid, preeclampsia, eclampsia, ectopic pregnancy, or bleeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there\u2019s a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> condition called gestational diabetes, where cardio <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercises<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are often encouraged by doctors to bring down blood sugar levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For expectant mums who can work out, do you have any safety tips to share?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expectant mums should always check with their doctors before moving forward with any exercise. If they get the green light, then it\u2019s always good to note that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/Bottles-Flasks-cat.11001155.11001241.11001245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staying hydrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is extremely important. And if they are working up a sweat and getting quite breathless, they should not stay at that intensity for too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a mum becomes short of breath, there\u2019s a high chance that the baby isn\u2019t getting enough oxygen too. We don\u2019t want that, so always exercise within what you\u2019re comfortable with. In other words, don\u2019t try anything new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Are there any exercises or activities that pregnant women should avoid?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As long as it\u2019s an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that she\u2019s used to, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant woman<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can exercise like anyone else and modify its intensity along the way as her belly grows bigger. I have seen pregnant women continue to do CrossFit, tae kwon do (no sparring, though), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/Weight-Training-Equipment-cat.11001273.11001301.11001304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight-lifting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and long-distance running.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I would say stay away from abs exercises as we don\u2019t want to compress the abdominals. They arise either from consuming something wrong (eg alcohol), or the hormones and\/or genes of the mum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Exercising during pregnancy must come naturally to you, but how would you encourage ladies who are less active to get started?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is my mission now. I try to share as much information as possible on my social media as well as with my friends, so I can clear up misconceptions, doubts, or worries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy exercises<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are something that a mother can do for herself. Because once you\u2019re pregnant, that\u2019s the start of when you\u2019re no longer fully yourself. You have to think of the baby and that continues as your child grows older. Prioritising your health is something that you can do for yourself at the very start of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is there anything expectant mums should nourish themselves with before and after their exercise?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just good, fresh, nutritious whole <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/Fresh-Frozen-Food-cat.11000003.11000099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (unprocessed foods). Eating a bit more protein and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shopee.com.my\/blog\/best-water-dispenser-malaysia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> well is a good idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essential Prenatal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercises For Pregnant Women<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For mums-to-be who can workout, here are five essential <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercises for pregnant women<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure a fitter pregnancy. Each workout comes with a modified version, so it\u2019s adaptable for when your bump grows bigger.
