With Chinese New Year just around the corner, it\u2019s time to put together your outfits for the festive season. Although modern styles are more common, there\u2019s always something so special about going all decked out in your fanciest ethnic wear. For the Year of the Rabbit, why not change things up by dressing yourself head to toe with some old-school charm? Here are four different types of <\/span>traditional Chinese clothing<\/span> and other CNY customs you should know about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Types Of <\/span>Traditional Chinese Clothing<\/span> For Men & Women\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

1. Hanfu<\/span><\/h3>\n

Tracing back to as far as over 4,000 years, the <\/span>hanfu<\/span><\/i> is one of the oldest <\/span>traditional Chinese clothing<\/span> to date. The apparel consists of an open cross-collared robe with long billowy sleeves, a <\/span>maxi skirt<\/span><\/a>, and a <\/span>belt<\/span><\/a> sash. Underneath, you\u2019ll usually wear inner garments made of cotton or linen. <\/span><\/p>\n

Though not the most common of outfits, it\u2019s an elaborate look that\u2019s perfect for when you want to stand out this CNY or at a <\/span>costume<\/span><\/a> party. There are many different styles of <\/span>hanfu<\/span><\/i>, but the ones from the <\/span>Tang<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Ming<\/span><\/a>, and Song periods are the most popular choice among women. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. Qipao\/Cheongsam<\/span><\/h3>\n

Now, you might be wondering if there\u2019s any particular difference between the <\/span>qipao<\/span><\/i><\/a> and <\/span>cheongsam<\/span><\/i>. For the most part, they refer to the same style of dress. However, the original <\/span>qipao<\/span><\/i> first came from the Manchu rule during the 17th century. Back then, the style was a lot looser, featuring an A-line cut and long, full sleeves. It was only in the 1920s that the fitted <\/span>cheongsams<\/span><\/i> we\u2019re more familiar with became popularised by Shanghai celebrities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, the <\/span>cheongsam<\/span><\/i><\/a> is by far the most common type of <\/span>traditional Chinese clothing<\/span> for women. This <\/span>one-piece garment<\/span><\/a> has a straight cut that accentuates your silhouette, creating a subtle hourglass shape. Its other outfit components consist of a high-neck collar, short cap sleeves, and a slit that parts up at the sides. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Tang Suit<\/span><\/h3>\n

The <\/span>Tang suit<\/span><\/a> originated from the traditional Manchu horseman uniform during the Qing dynasty. There are two layers to the Tang suit. The outer layer is a <\/span>jacket<\/span><\/a> with a mandarin collar that\u2019s around five to 10 centimetres high up the neck. Meanwhile, the inner layer is the <\/span>changsan<\/span><\/i>. This is like a long robe or tunic, but nowadays, you can also wear an <\/span>undershirt<\/span><\/a> or <\/span>T-shirt<\/span><\/a> underneath your Tang suit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The suit was initially worn in dark blue colours<\/a> before it evolved from a protective apron for the changsan<\/i> into a staple fashion piece in traditional Chinese clothing. The lapels include knotted \u201cfrog\u201d or pankou<\/i> fastenings that come in floral or animal designs. These buttons are usually made of silk wrapped around stiff materials like copper wires so that the shape will stay in place. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Zhongshan\/Mao Suit<\/span><\/h3>\n

Another <\/span>traditional Chinese clothing<\/span> for men is the <\/span>Zhongshan suit<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s a structured piece of <\/span>outerwear<\/span><\/a> that blends Western-styled clothing with traditional Chinese ones. The suit features four big pockets at the front, two at the top and another two at the bottom, spaced symmetrically from left to right. These pockets are supposed to symbolise four virtues\u2014courtesy, righteousness, honesty, and shame.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike the Tang suit, the Zhongshan suit does not feature the ornate <\/span>pankou<\/span><\/i>. Instead, it has five central <\/span>buttons<\/span><\/a> that go up to the collar. They represent the independence of five powers: administration, jurisdiction, supervision, review, and legislation. There are also three smaller buttons on each sleeve of the suit. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dos\u2019 & Don\u2019ts Of Chinese New Year Dressing<\/span><\/h2>\n

1. DO: Wear Only New Clothes<\/span><\/h3>\n

Besides being able to revamp your style, there\u2019s another reason why people wear new clothes and shoes<\/a>, especially on CNY. And that\u2019s because many believe that buying new things represents getting ready for a fresh new start to the new year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. DON\u2019T: Black & White Are NOT Allowed<\/span><\/h3>\n

Admittedly, this depends on how traditional your family is, but typically, black and white clothes are completely out of the question. Black is associated with death, depression, or just bad luck in general while white symbolises mourning. So, we\u2019d say it\u2019s best to stay away from these two colours altogether, at least until CNY is over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. DO: Bring Out The Red & Gold\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

CNY <\/span>decorations<\/span><\/a> are red for a reason, as it\u2019s known as a colour of luck and prosperity. From <\/span>cushion covers<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>table cloths<\/span><\/a>, you\u2019ll see red displayed <\/span>everywhere<\/span><\/i>, and your clothes are no exception! Besides, it\u2019ll certainly add a nice pop of colour to the family pictures. Alternatively, if you\u2019re not a big fan of red, you can opt for gold<\/a> instead, which symbolises good wealth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. DON\u2019T: Wash Your Clothes<\/span><\/h3>\n

No, we\u2019re not saying to completely ditch washing your clothes for the entire duration of CNY. It\u2019s only for the first two days because they\u2019re seen as the Water God\u2019s birthday. Hence, washing your clothes on those days would be considered disrespectful. Furthermore, some believe that pouring away water after washing would be like pouring away your wealth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
